About

A Tale of Pirates: A Dummy Mutiny is a lighthearted VR shooter game set in a whimsical pirate world. Inspired by the classic carnival shooting games, the player is given a pair of pistols and is required to strike down as many dummies as they can in a short period of time. The game then keeps track of the score, which is calculated according to distance, headshots and consecutive kills.

The concept

A Tale of Pirates: A Dummy Mutiny was conceived as a small-scale digital experience designed specifically for use at fairs and public events. The game functions as an interactive attraction, drawing inspiration from classic fairground shooting galleries and offering a quick, accessible play session suited to crowded exhibition environments. Its primary purpose is promotional: it was created as a marketing activation for the board game A Tale of Pirates, sharing its pirate theme and playful tone while helping attract visitors to the booth and introduce them to the universe of the tabletop game.

Understanding the core gameplay

Defining the core gameplay was essential to support the level design and ensure a comfortable experience for players in a fair setting. Early discussions focused on the player’s field of view, which was set to 110°, and how this would influence the spatial layout of the encounter area. Through testing, we positioned the player so that the enemy spawn zone sits directly in front of them and is almost entirely contained within this field of view. This choice allows players to clearly see incoming targets without requiring excessive camera movement, helping maintain readability and reducing the risk of motion sickness or disorientation during short, fast-paced play sessions.

The level design

The level design process began with defining a clear and readable structure for enemy spawns. During the layout phase, we organized the play area using a series of concentric circles positioned in front of the player. This arrangement helped distribute enemies evenly across the space and maintain a consistent level of difficulty, ensuring that targets would appear in predictable yet varied positions within the player’s field of view. After establishing this structure, we moved to the blockout phase, creating a simplified version of the level using basic elements. This prototype allowed us to test the fundamental aspects of gameplay—such as session duration, rate of fire, and enemy spawn frequency— and adjust them before moving to the actual details.

Environmental art

The level is set on the deck of a pirate ship, and the environmental art was designed to reinforce this setting while also supporting gameplay. A variety of pirate-themed props—such as sacks, chests, and cannons—were placed across the scene, often serving as partial cover for the dummies and adding small tactical variations to how targets appear. Beyond these functional elements, additional props were introduced to make the environment feel more lively and interactive. For example, birds perched around the ship would fly away when shot, and a small bell could be rung by hitting it with a shot, adding playful feedback and encouraging players to interact with the surroundings beyond the main targets.

The aftermath

Following the completion of the initial level, the project was expanded with additional content to increase replayability and player engagement. Four more levels were developed, each offering slight variations in layout and pacing while maintaining the same core gameplay structure. To tie these levels together, we implemented a simple progression system that allowed players to unlock new stages by achieving specific in-game objectives, such as defeating a certain number of enemies. This approach encouraged repeated play sessions and gave players a clear sense of advancement, providing enough content for a Steam publication.
